Guinea Pig Bedding Timothy Hay

Guinea Pig Bedding Explained: Timothy Hay is Best!

There are dos and don’ts when it comes to guinea pig bedding. Do use sawdust and ‘timothy hay’ in combination as this provides an absorbant and pleasant environment for your pigs.

Take note though that some guinea pig keepers have found that a few individual guinea pigs are allergic to sawdust, so watch for such a reaction.

Don’t use straw as guinea pig bedding because the ends can be quite sharp and may poke your guinea pigs eyes. Also guinea pigs have sensitive skin compared to other rodents. This warning is especially important for baby guinea pigs as they tend to burrow more into their bedding.

The best type of hay to use is timothy hay as this is recommended by many vets and guinea pig breeders. It is grown specially for using with guinea pigs.

Shredded paper mixed with sawdust is also used (avoid coloured paper containing harmful inks). All bedding should be placed on top of newspaper for ease of cleaning out.

So, timothy hay is best!
