Choosing Your Guinea Pig’s Name
Possibly one of the first things that you want to do when you buy yourself a new piggie is to think of a perfect name for your guinea pig. However this can be quite a tricky task, what with so many different possibilities.
Of course, when you buy your guinea pig, it may already have a name, especially if you have bought it from someone, or from a rescue centre. In this case you may want to think of an abbreviation of that name, or a nickname for your guinea pig if you don’t like it’s present name. Or you might want to change your new guinea pig’s name altogether
There are many different categories of names for guinea pigs.
Human Names – many human names lend themselves to guinea pigs names perfectly.
Flowers – You could call your guinea pig after your favourite flower, for example ‘Rose’.
Appearance - It is possible to get your new guinea pig’s name simply from it’s appearance, such as calling it ‘spot’ or ‘stripey’.
Foods – The names of foods can also lend themselves to names for your guinea pigs. For example, ‘Wheeto’ or ‘Twix’.
Herbs and plants – These are also good for names, such as Ivy.
Pairs or groups of names – If you are getting more than one guinea pig, you may consider using a group theme. For example, you could call your guinea pigs ‘ Honey’, ‘Cinnamon’ and ‘Syrup’ if you wanted to use a food theme.
Characters form cartoons or books – You may have a favourite book, and want to use the names from your favourite characters.
Names often used for other animals – You could use names often used for other animals, e.g ‘Bowser’, or the name of another animal such as ‘Puma’.
There really are endless possibilities of names for your new pet.
